How to Obtain a Library Card

Bring your picture ID and proof of residence to the Library, fill out and sign the application, and start borrowing right away!

Parents need to accompany and sign for cards for children under 16.

The proof of residence must include your name and current address within the library district. Acceptable proof of residence can be mail postmarked no later than 30 days. This can include a rental agreement, property tax bill, utility bill, current vehicle insurance card or closing papers on purchased property. If your unexpired state or federal photo ID reflects your current address, there is no need for additional proof of residence.

Who Can Get a Card?

The library is tax-supported by the residents who live in the library district. Check your St. Clair County or Monroe County Real Estate Tax bill. If New Athens District Library is listed as a ‘Taxing Body’ under ‘Distribution’, then you are eligible for a library card at no charge. You can also visit the Illinois Public Library Service Area Populations Map by clicking here. Input your home address and zoom out to find your library district.

Borrowing Limits

New Athens District Library materials have varying borrowing periods, based on the type of material.  Up to 10 items may be checked out at a time. Library materials with holds placed on them may not be renewed. Holds may be placed on up to 10 items owned by the New Athens Library or any library in the database.

Placing Holds and Renewing Borrowed Items

Holds may be placed on library materials by using a library card and accessing the online card catalog at http://nwap.illshareit.com.  You can also use the SHARE app, found in your app store. Placing holds requires the person’s account number (the barcode on the back of the library card) and a 4 number password (which is chosen by the individual when they apply for a library card).  By accessing their account, a person can view their patron information, view a list of items currently checked out, renew items currently checked out and place holds on library materials.  The New Athens District Library does not charge overdue fines, but there are fines for the replacement of lost, damaged, or overdue materials. If a person’s fines exceed $5.00, then they will be unable to place holds.

Talking Book and Braille Service

The Talking Book and Braille Service (TBBS) supports the activities of the Illinois Network of Libraries Serving the Blind and Physically Handicapped in providing excellent public library service to any Illinois resident who is unable to read standard print material due to a permanent or temporary visual or physical disability.

The Regional Library acts as the liaison with National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) and circulates books to all residents enrolled in the Talking Book and Braille Service. In conjunction with a local service center, the regional center provides a full range of library services specializing in braille and audio books.

If you know someone who could benefit from this service, go to www.ilbph.org for more information or call 800-655-5576 ext. 1.

The website provides links to apply for service and links that explain how the service works.
